Different rules for Uber and taxis in Toronto
Toronto licenses Uber, Lyft and similar apps as private transportation companies (PTCs). Their drivers may only take trips booked through the app – street hails and taxi stands are reserved for taxis.
Taxi fares follow the meter rates set by the City in Municipal Code Chapter 546. PTCs set their own rates: the price has to be shown before the trip, but the City does not cap surge pricing.
How Uber prices rides in Toronto
Uber calculates the price in its app and can raise it when demand is high – at rush hour, after concerts and games or in bad weather. The price, fees and any surcharges are charged through the app, and Uber keeps a service fee from each trip.
